Leadership Vestavia Hills

brand identity update

Leadership Vestavia Hills is a community-led organization committed to developing leadership within the City of Vestavia Hills. Until now, this organization has lived under the same visual identity as the City of Vestavia Hills. I was asked to develop a new, independent visual identity system that is simple, modern, and completely unique to LVH. They also wanted to incorporate the same symbol that is often associated with Vestavia Hills and that appears in the city’s visual identity: The Temple of Sibyl.

Similar, but different.

Most often a rebrand happens because the existing system is dated or is no longer sufficient. This was not the case for Leadership Vestavia Hills. The city’s brand is lovely—elegant, strong, and tasteful. So the challenge here was unique in that the bar had already been set quite high. I was to build a new visual identity that would a) Clearly be associated with Vestavia Hills b) Stand out as its own separate entity from the city, and c) Address the LVH team’s desire for a “modern” look. To strike a balance, we kept the city's colors, opted for a low-contrast sans serif as the base for the logotype, extended the crossbar of the “H” to add a human touch, and adjusted the crossbars of all letterforms to “bounce” a little from one to the next. The result is modern and authoritative, but still warm and approachable.

icons. icons. icons.

Icons add enormous value to your brand identity system by providing more opportunities to incorporate personality into your brand materials. They’re a great way to tell more of the story without running the risk of overusing your logo! (And YES, there is such a thing!) Icons can be used for website navigation, social media, advertising…the list goes on. The versatility of icons makes them an invaluable part of any identity system.
